Excellence

Thanks Kulvinder ji for your mail. You are right. There is a great need to promote education among Sikhs and motivate them to try and pursue for excellence in their areas of endeavor.

Both the objectives have some interlinking but may need significantly different approaches. The Jewish experience that has been cited, bears it out. I will try and help anyway I can though I would suggest careful appraisal of SELF proposal in our present setting.

Thank you Dr Sahib. I have not been to Baru Sahib but have met many times with Baba Iqbal Singh and their groups here in the US. The images and impressions as well as a few words I had with the Baba did leave some lingering disconcerting thoughts.

The group including young students stayed at the home of a volunteer who coordinated with the Gurdwara or also arranged a kirtan session at home for fund raising. Continuous travel across US living under such circumstances can be very arduous for the youth. I also wondered how much exposure they got about the life in the US or to Americans. In
other words they do serve the purpose of fund raising but may not be adding much to their world vision.

I also have met a young teen boy who was at Baru Sahib and has come to live with his parents near here. The boy is diligent and is well molded in the same way as his pious amritdhari parents but seems reclusive, withdrawn and pensive. I tried talking to him even during Hemkunt International last year where he was a contestant and I was the keynote speaker and his father, the boy and I had considerable time together but it did not come to much. I had found similar reclusive ness among the kids brought on fund raising missions. I hope the kids do not feel suppressed – a common feeling among those in Boarding schools anyway.

So I keep asking myself do we have enough information how those graduating from there are performing in life? What are the relative performance and social skills of those who were resident students and day scholars; Sikhs and non-Sikhs?

I also tried asking about setting scholarship but the Baba seemed irked and clearly preferred contribution into the general fund rather than linked to a specific purpose.

I do not really know much first hand but have impressions collected from chance encounters. I could be totally off the mark but felt that I might raise the points for what they are worth.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts,
